چکیده

To evaluate the characteristics of edge-preserving adaptive filters for selectively eliminating noise without affecting resolution in low-dose scanning, we have developed a digital phantom image and evaluated noise statistical values, noise characteristics, and resolution characteristics. The results confirmed that edge-preserving adaptive filters function as smoothing filters in low-contrast regions containing noise, permitting the density resolution to be improved, while the strength of the smoothing filter is reduced to maintain spatial resolution in high-contrast regions containing small structures. It has therefore been confirmed that edge-preserving adaptive filters function as filters for selectively eliminating only the noise elements that are increased when the exposure dose is reduced and that such filters are effective for improving image quality. Using such digital phantom images, images acquired using conditions that are difficult to set in actual CT scanning can be obtained and images specifically for the evaluation target can easily be generated. In addition, the noise level, frequency distribution of the noise, and resolution characteristics of the objects present in the input image can be freely set. It is concluded that evaluation of processing using a digital phantom image is effective for evaluating image processing.

Assessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method

Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...

Adaptive Noise Reduction toward Low-dose Computed Tomography

An efficient noise treatment scheme has been developed to achieve low-dose CT diagnosis based on currently available CT hardware and image reconstruction technologies. The scheme proposed includes two main parts: filtering in sinogram domain and smoothing in image domain. The acquired projection sinograms were first treated by our previously proposed Karhunen-Loeve (K-L) domain penalized weight...

Shearlet-Based Adaptive Noise Reduction in CT Images

The noise in reconstructed slices of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is of unknown distribution, non-stationary, oriented and difficult to distinguish from main structural information. This requires the development of special post-processing methods based on the local statistical evaluation of the noise component. This paper presents an adaptive method of reducing noise in CT images employing th...

Dose Assessment in Computed Tomography Examination and Establishment of Local Diagnostic Reference Levels in Mazandaran, Iran

Background: Medical X-rays are the largest man-made source of public exposure to ionizing radiation. While the benefits of Computed Tomography (CT) are well known in accurate diagnosis, those benefits are not risk-free. CT is a device with higher patient dose in comparison with other conventional radiation procedures. Objective: This study is aimed at evaluating radiation dose to patients from ...

Validation of computed tomography-based attenuation correction of deviation between theoretical and actual values for four computed tomography scanners

Objective: In this study, we aimed to validate the accuracy of computed tomography-based attenuation correction (CTAC) using the bilinear scaling method. Methods: The measured attenuation coefficient (μm) was compared to a theoretical attenuation coefficient (μt ) using four different CT scanners and an RMI 467 phantom. The effective energy of the CT beam X-rays was calculated, using the aluminu...
